'I was fed up of Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii'

A lot is happening in Shweta Keswani's life – she has signed a new serial Mohalla Mohabbat Wala and is enjoying her courtship with fiancé Alex O Neil, an American based in Mumbai. Of her role in Mohalla... she says, "I play a hot and happening Salsa teacher. And since I had no clue about the dance form, I took Salsa lessons from Uma Shankar. After all, one has to work hard to get the character right."

Talking about her stint with Ekta Kapoor's soaps, she rues, "I was getting fed up of my role in Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii. For how long could I have carried on playing that evil and malicious character? So, I quit and took a break." According to Shweta, people had stopped identifying with her character. When she met her fans in small towns, they asked her why she is playing such an evil woman? But she does admit that family soaps and kitchen politics are still enjoyed by the audience. "No matter how much soaps are criticised, they will continue to have a dedicated fan following. The TRP ratings say so," she quips.

Shweta had a brief stint with cinema with movies Love In Nepal and The Memsahib. Shweta met many directors and found that most of them are biased against television actors. "Established directors have set camps in the industry and they are vary of taking television actors. Only upcoming directors like Anurag Basu and Nagesh Kukunoor are open to experimenting and taking new people," she adds. But she agrees that shooting for a film is any day simpler as compared to television. "TV is full of pressure while films are more relaxed."

Moving on to the personal front, Shweta informs that no date has been finalised for the marriage yet, and that she will continue to work even after tying the knot. "Though I am not sure whether I'd still be doing television," she remarks. On being engaged to an American, she says that it makes no difference to their relationship. "Alex is a great guy and we have been seeing each other for the past three years. I have dated Indian men before, and those I liked were already married."
